(Reuters) - China's Huawei Technologies [HWT.UL] has requested a meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to discuss a deal to delay the country's 5G phone network's possible termination, the Sunday Times reported. The K newspaper reported on Sunday.
According to the newspaper, the Chinese telecom equipment maker is demanding a delay in the dismantling of the country's 5G telecommunications networks after the 205 elections, in the hope that the new government will reject the decision. Can bit.ly/3iTYDRi
The report added that Huawei would in turn pledge to maintain its equipment in the UK, which is also used in 2G, 3G and 4G networks.
The UK gave Huawei a limited role in its future 5G network in January, but ministers have since said that introducing US sanctions on the company means it can no longer be a reliable supplier.
Johnson has come under intense pressure from the United States and some British lawmakers to ban telecommunications equipment makers on security grounds.
Chinese Ambassador to London Liu Xiaoming warned last week that getting rid of Huawei would send a "very bad message" to Chinese business.
According to a Government minister and official, the official update on the Chinese company is expected to be published before July 22.
